Important Points About Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE)

• Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is conducted by the GATE committee, IISc, and seven other IITs on behalf of the Ministry of Human Resources Development, National Coordinating Board, and Department of Education.

• For the GATE 2023 exam, IIT Kanpur will be the exam-conducting institute.

• It is an all-India test conducted in online mode, approved, and organized in eight regions across the nation and six cities abroad.

• It comprises 29 disciplines or subjects as of 2023 since Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering (combined) and Geomatics Engineering have been introduced as two new subjects.

• Furthermore, two new paper combinations for GATE 2023 are introduced. Now, there are 82 two-paper combinations available for GATE. Qualifying for GATE is mandatory for access to the courses offered at MHRD-supported institutes and other government agencies.

• Candidates can choose one or two papers from the pre-approved combination, of which CSE or Computer Science and Information Technology Engineering is one of the most opted for.

• The purpose of the exam is to test students’ proficiency in subjects related to Engineering and Science.

• GATE exam scores are valid for 3 years only from the date of declaration of the results.

• The syllabus for the test is extremely thorough and covers 10 to 14 subjects from the engineering stream.

• The General Aptitude section is common for all papers. It comprises 15% of marks, whereas 85% of marks would be comprised of the core subjects.

Best Strategy To Study GATE Civil Engineering (CE)

• For the GATE 2023, it is a must to analyze the GATE 2023 Civil Engineering syllabus. It means that you need not complete the entire syllabus rather you need to prepare for the exam more smartly.

• You have to find out whether there is any connection between different chapters, the weightage carried by the topics or sections, and also the difficulty level of each one of them. After analyzing these things, you can have a more practical and effective preparation plan.

• You need to be aware of the exam pattern. It is so because the GATE exam has a mix of different types of questions, including one-mark/two-mark questions, Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQs), and Numerical Answer Types (NAT).

• For a good score in GATE CE, you must ensure that you prepare a long-term study plan that includes regular revision, appearance in mock tests and test series, and also time for relaxation.

• However, the study plan should be actionable. This means you must be realistic about how much time you will need to complete a topic. Also, see to it that the plan covers both short-term and long-term goals.

• While the market is flooded with GATE preparation books on Civil Engineering a candidate can't follow all of them. The best strategy in this regard is to follow what your teachers suggest. Also, go through the interviews of previous year's toppers for having an idea of the books followed by them.

• Only study and no revision will not help you in retaining what you have studied for the first time. Therefore, while preparing a study plan, it is important to dedicate a whole day to the revision.
